Authorities have embarked on a process to extradite fugitives Pastor Shepherd Bushiri and his wife, Mary. The leader of the Enlightenment Christian Gathering revealed this past weekend that he had fled to Malawi on Wednesday, violating his bail conditions.

The Bushiris are facing multiple fraud charges.

They were released on R200 000 bail each.

Government through a statement has said South African authorities will invoke the SADC Protocol on Extradition which Malawi is a signatory to.

No details have been provided on how the church leaders left the country undetected.

The Hawks, the Justice and Home Affairs Departments are investigating how the Bushiris crossed several state borders without sounding any alarm.

Government has come under heavy criticized because it was Bushiri who notified the world of his brazen escape from justice and not South African officials. Additional reporting by SABC
